The daily drop

Posted in Daily life at 11:36 pm by hanne

A few ATCs – including a very early Easter rabbit – a red pillow for my sofa, a poster for a workshop on “Icons” I’m going to teach next month to a group of preschool teachers and a photo session at Huset in Århus ….that’s all I managed to squeeze in the last couple of days next to the usual programme with meetings, teaching, kids etc.

No wonder we all look forward for the winter holidays in two weeks…

With One Palette

Posted in Art projects at 11:18 pm by hanne

Just before Christmas I got an invitation from editor-in-chief of Somerset Studio, Jenny Doh, to become her “With One Palette” artist for the July/August 2007 issue. I accepted the challenge on the spot; I knew immediately what colour my palette was going to be about!

So yesterday I mailed this bunch of stuff to Laguna Hills, CA, where it’s going to be photographed from one end to another for the articl, but the adventure doesn’t stop here.

Around New Year I got more invitations to submit artwork to Somerset Studio and some of the other art and craft magazines published by Stampington & Company. It’s wonderful to be asked!

It might sound strange but sometimes all the bits and odd ends of life’s jigsaw puzzle suddenly seem to fit and you can see the whole picture before you. That’s the feeling I got around New Year. In these days I was really considering my situation and the next steps to go in order to bring my art forward – planning how to take more initiatives to get my work noticed. And at the very same moment I received these invitations. Who says coincidence? Who says destiny?

Samsø-workshop

Posted in Artists´Books, Inspiration, Samsø at 8:02 pm by hanne

Had a pleasant sail: the wind did not run too much across the route so I arrived safely and without being seasick.

At the workshop we started by looking at the work done since last time. Some of the participants had been very busy and done really great jobs. Others hadn’t managed to go so far because of other activities in their lives – but still – all claimed to be much found of making Artists´ Books and the class ended up deciding to arrange its own exhibition at the library for Easter! As the workshop took place at the library, the librarian was aked immediately and the arrangement was accepted at once. So now I’ll look forward to receive an invitation for that event!

I´m sailing…

Posted in Artists´Books, On my way... at 8:24 am by hanne

I´m going to Samsø today for a follow-up workshop on Artists´ Books. The workshop is taking place at the local library…and this time I promise to remember to bring both my camera and the memory card!

I´m going to catch the ferry this morning and I can hear it´s rather windy outside - but hopefully it´s not quite as stormy as this.

Inspiration for decoration…

Posted in Inspiration at 9:48 pm by hanne

We started an interesting subject in my new design-class today: the study ornaments, borders and patterns – a great and inexhaustible source of inspiration: It’s amazing what you can get out of a simple motif you twist, mirror and repeat any elements.

And when you first get on the track, you find the world is full of beautiful and interesting patterns.

D Day = Donatello Day

Posted in Horses at 10:51 pm by hanne

Today Emily was introduced to Donatello and we took a long ride at the Woods of Ejstrup: One person was riding the horse – one running next to it… It was so funny and exiting we were carried totally away until suddenly it started to pour down. We all got really ´soaked by the cold rain and felt like drenched rats when reaching the shelter and warmth of the stable!

After cleaning and drying Donatello and putting him in his box with lots of hay and carrots
we rushed home for a bath and a nice hot cup of tea.

We´re warm and comfortable again now – and in five minutes we’ll accompany my mother and Anna Sofie to the local cinema to se “The Queen”. Doesn’t it sound good?

Historiska Museet, Stockholm

What to bring home from your travels?

First and foremost I take a lot of photos, God, I love my camera! Photos are a great solution: Your can store impressions – for later use – and you can share what you have seen.

Traveling´s (always) on my mind…

Posted in Travelling at 9:26 pm by hanne

It’s hard to understand, it seems ages away but it is only half a year ago we were sitting here at the sidewalk somewhere in Old Town, Stockholm, enjoying the music, the street life and the wonderful weather.
You´ve probably noticed I love traveling. The very sound of foreign names of cities and places makes the blood run faster in my veins. Leaving daily life, say timetables, routines and obligations, always opens my senses and mind for new ideas. That’s what I like about traveling!
What do you think of traveling? Where’re you going, what’re you dreaming of, what inspires you: a quiet place somewhere in the countryside – or the big cities loaded with museums, galleries, theaters, shops and flea markets? And what countries and cultures attract you the most?

Posted in Artists´Books at 8:02 pm by hanne

Today Grete and Else from X-piir took a selection of our Artists´ Books to Randers Bibliotek. The books at the picture are all mine, still it gives you a hint what it’s all about. Also here´s a link to an podcast interview - in Danish though…

The exhibition runs till 3.rd February. If you happen to pass by, please have a look…

Of use

Posted in Art projects at 7:42 pm by hanne

This is my grandfather and his horse. My grand father was a dragoon and a horseman in his young years. He always told stories from his time in the army. Interesting but not necessarily pleasant stuff! Still it seemed to have been some of the most intense experiences in his lifetime. Even as an old man he remembered very well: names and places and events – and he was a gifted storyteller! He passed away 18 years ago now, but in my mind I can still hear his voice and see his gestures while telling.

Anyway, this collage is a tribute to him and it has just been published in the January/February issue of Somerset Studio. I haven’t seen the magazine yet, although I’m dying to. I know it’s on its way; it has been send from USA but the Danish customs service holds back the parcel containing the magazine as well as the collage with my granddad.

I’ve been asked to prove it’s really my own artwork being returned to me– but my explanation hasn’t been sufficient so far it seems and now I´ve been asked to ask the editor of Somerset to mail and explain the situation! I´ve experienced this situation before when my artwork has been returned after exhibitions or other sessions abroad. It’s most annoying: I just want to have my collages back! And of course I hardly can wait to see the magazine where it´s published…  but somehow I have to see this as an exercise in patience…

And it’s quite funny; I’ve just had another waiting-impatiently-for-the-postman-experience. This autumn a costumer from Norway asked me to make 3 paintings/collages with her kids. I started when I got back from Vilnius but at the beginning I had some problems getting hold of the proper materials. And then the task tricked me technically in different ways, so honestly, it took longer than expected till I was satisfied and could send everything off – right before Christmas. It was a god feeling to “clean the table” for Christmas and New Year.

And then both parts waited….. of course my Norwegian costumer was exited to see the result – and I was equally exited to hear her reaction. So we waited – and waited – we even started to get a little anxious too, you know, the address label might have fallen off, the parcel might have disappeared somewhere – at some squeaking, foreign post office. One never knows….

But finally, yesterday it arrived – and it was appreciated! It always makes me so happy to know: something I created means something to other people – not only to friends and family – but also to people I’ve never met. It truly lifts me up and makes me feel “of use”.
