Work in progress

Posted in Quilts at 8:26 pm by hanne

Okay, now we’re this far.

Tomorrow I’ll remove all the pieces of cardboard. It´s about 438 pieces…

N.B. Please notice Nala performing her zehn-meditation. For one reason or another our cats always want to sit at my patchwork and meditate for hours! Even when they come directly from the garden with dusty fur or wet feet! Yes actually, especially when they come  from the garden with their wet or even dirty feet.

Stuff for Olivia

Posted in Projects at 6:22 pm by hanne

Today I´ve send a selection of postcards, collages, business cards, art-money and quilts to my publisher at Olivia.

A gap has suddenly appeared in the line of scheduled publications – and I’ve agreed to step in. It means the deadline is now 1.th. August, and that means I really have to speed up sewing and writing! But it also means my book will be published in the autumn some time – it doesn’t have to wait till next spring!

So today this bunch of stuff was sent of for the photographer to do some initial shoots for a book presentation catalogue, to show the booksellers the new titles they can expect for the upcoming season.

I´m so excited about this – and I know I´ll have to focus my energy, so be prepared for some very short posts the next couple of months!

“Handbooks” ready for Reykjavik

Posted in Artists´Books at 12:59 am by hanne

Tomorrow I send 3 brand new “practical handbooks” to an Artists´ Books exhibition in Sýningarsalur at Iceland.

I’m not going myself, but so are my travelling companions from the Vilnius tour. (Guess if, I’m just a little bit envious…)

However, this is my “Handbook for Gardening at a Limited Space.” It’s made out of a black old, cardboard box filled with everything you need for turning a windowsill into a minor garden: A bunch of my newly invented paper jiffy pots, tools, seeds, even a bottle of water and a bag of mould – as well as directions for getting it all started.

Moreover, talking about the life of plants gives me the opportunity to talk about one of my favourite philosophical topics: the cycles of life with sprouting, growth, blooming and finally the dying down…

Recycled newspaper….

Posted in Inspiration at 10:48 pm by hanne

Look carefully: little sprouts are appearing in these homemade recycled paper jiffy pots.

I made the pots last week by wrapping some newspaper around this “thing”. I really don’t know what it’s called in English – it’s not to find in my dictionary. However, it’s a kitchen tool – a zinc cylinder with a hole in the bottom and a wooden part that fit’s into the cylinder. Traditionally used for making balls or dumplings for the soup – and to form dough into vanilla cookies. Now it’s even a gardener’s tool!

Anyway, this is what I did: I wrapped the paper around, sprinkled the paper with water, squeezed it a little, removed the “thing” – and voila: a nice little jiffy pot for pre-sprouting made out of 100 % recycled materials!

And one day when your pre-sprouted plants are ready to set out, you just dig a whole in the soil and place your plant, the jiffy pot included. Don’t bother to remove the pot – the paper will soon disintegrate and vanish in the soil.

Knit-in-public-invitation

Posted in Projects at 11:37 pm by hanne

In exactly one month, Saturday 9th July it’s world-wide-knit-in-public-day (w.w.k.i.p. day) and you’re hereby invited to join a gathering from 13 – 16 at the Århus Music House.

If it’s summer like and the sun shines we’ll be knitting outside at the lawn/ in the garden/ small park where you’re encouraged to bring your tea, lunch and knitting gear. If the weather turns out to be bad we’ll meet inside at the Balcony Gallery. Inside is also a café where you can buy coffee, lunch etc. if you haven’t got your own along…

By the way, as I’m not a knitting fundamentalist all sorts of textile crafts are welcome, so feel free to show up even though you prefer crotchet to knitting…

See you 9th July!

A new call…

Posted in Projects at 12:17 am by hanne

Yesterday I flickered trough a bunch of my collages and stuff – trying to pick out some qualified art work for another new Somerset publication. Tell me, how many magazines and special publications do these people manage to start….?! Anyway, I can’t resist this call!

I love combining sewing with mixed-media projects . Stitches are not limited just to fabrics. Stitching can be added to almost anything including paper, transparencies, fabric, batting, canvas, foil, paper bags, and much more. It´s a great way to connect layers of material.

Now I plan to send some of these art-money, business cards, book-covers and collages. Hope to see at least some of it on newsstands in half a year…

Somerset Life, French Connections and Flea Marked Style

Posted in Inspiration at 7:01 pm by hanne

onderful

Wonderful and inspiring books and magazines are hitting my mail box these days.

First of all here’s the new publication from Stampington Somerset Life; loaded with impressive photos and texts by different artists; reports on how to infuse daily life with simple pleasures, art, romance, creativity and beauty. The superior idea is to make every day extraordinary!

I’ve been very anxious about this because I have contributed a post about blogging, and it’s always funny to see it in a context…

Corey Amaro and Michelle Ward are the other two bloggers involved. Corey is a favorite of mine – Michelle I knew in advance from her delicious stamps…

And the books… I actually don’t buy books very often – I borrow at the library! But these books are a sort of research I keep telling myself. I have to be properly updated upon lifestyle, interiors, flea marked finds, 2.nd hand stuff – things like that… now I’m practically working in that field….

In other words: I have just signed up to as a book club member – and this is my first supply…

In a thoughtful corner…

Posted in Projects at 11:35 pm by hanne

Half a year ago at the exhibition in Vilnius I met Sigurborg og Anna, two wonderful mixed media artists from Iceland, who kindly invited my group X-piir to come to Reykjavik in June (and that´s pretty soon!) to participate in an Artists´ Books exhibition

The title of the exhibition is “Handbækur” which means handbooks in Icelandic.  Within the next couple of weeks I’m going to work out – and send – my version of handbækur. So right now you find me in the thoughtful corner of my garden. I have a few ideas what to create. I´ll show you later how it ends up…
